THE COURSE
HOW IT WORKS
CHOOSE YOUR SUMMIT
If you’ve ever run a Backyard Ultra, you’ll feel right at home here – with one key twist.
At Backyard Everest, every lap still starts on the hour, every hour, but instead of running until you’re the last one standing, you’ll be chasing summits.
PAY THE GATEKEEPER
When you collect your bib, you’ll also receive a stack of chip tokens – one for each hour you’ve entered. So, 12-hour runners get 12 chip tokens, 6-hour runners get 6, and so on. Each token represents your ticket to start a lap. To enter the starting corral, simply hand one of your chip tokens to the Gatekeeper so you can begin that lap. Runners taking on the full 24 hours won’t receive chip tokens – they’re already committed to every lap, every hour – there’s no negotiating with the gatekeeper when you’ve already signed up for every single lap.
FINISH YOUR LAP
Just like a Backyard, you must finish the lap within the hour for it to count. Miss the cutoff, and that lap distance won’t be added to your total. But, it doesn't mean your race is over like a typical backyard ultra, it just means that the last lap won't count to your summits and you can go out again at the start of another hour.
TAKE A BREAK
Need a break? No problem. Runners can leave the course at any time after completing a lap and may return to run more laps later during the 24-hour period. There’s no requirement to run consecutive laps unless a runner is attempting the full 24 hours. You can rest, refuel, or sit out as many hours as you like, then jump back in when you're ready – as long as you’ve still got chip tokens left to pay the Gatekeeper.
TOP UP YOUR CHIP TOKENS
Run out of chip tokens but still want to climb higher? You can purchase extra chip tokens during the event to unlock additional laps and chase more summits. These chip tokens are non-transferable and non-refundable once issued, so choose your mountain wisely.

There is a dedicated NTTD/Backyard Everest - Buy/Swap/Sell Page on Facebook. Inevitably, some entrants will not be able to participate, for a variety of reasons, and the opportunity to buy/swap/sell entries will be made live for runners to arrange between themselves on our registration platform.
QUALIFICATION
As the event is run on a 5.3km loop course, there are no qualification requirements for Backyard Everest. However, please do not take the fatigue and conditions for granted. It is expected that you have trained appropriately for the event you are entered into.
